Photograph by Michael Appleton, 2011 New York Daily News
This photograph was taken in 2011 on the first day same-sex marriage was legalized in New York. It exemplifies the positive change that legalizing gay marriage brought to same-sex couple and supporters. It also shows how long it took to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, and it shows that we are not done. The wheelchair symbolizes how long it took to legalize gay marriage and shows that we cannot wait longer to legalize same-sex marriage states with laws against it.
