Gold Miners nos. 1139 and 5122
Interpretive Statement:
This photo and the many others taken by Margaret Bourke White were the first to expose South Africa’s apartheid to the american public. The apartheid and racism had plagued South Africa for 3 centuries prior to its first exposure in the beginning of the cold war era. This photo documents the oppression and the enslavement experienced by almost all africans in South Africa, not just gold miners #1139 and 5122.
