Nazi Rally 1937

This photo shows the overwhelming support that Hitler and the Nazi Party entertained in the 30’s. It is impossible to call Hitler insane or a single madman when he was able to organize all the people in this photo, as well as millions of others, into the most powerful death machine the world has ever seen.

This piece of art is showing that the police are preforming searches on innocent people without probable cause. When all Dorothy wants is to go home. The police officer is slowing her down.

The Ukrainian region of Chernobyl serves as a grave reminder of the risks of nuclear power.  However, the world is in need of clean and efficient energy, which the nuclear method provides when it is executed correctly.  There is a debate, then, on whether the benefits on nuclear power outweigh the risk for catastrophe that is represented in this image by Chernobyl.

"For Children's Seizures, Turning to Medical Marijuana," Paulo Siqueira, Mar. 26, 2015

This photo shows that because of the abuse of some, cannabis must be kept hidden in the dark. Unfortunately by doing so, we have shadowed it’s beneficial uses. This photo also shows that for some cannabis is a light in the dark.

"No One is Born Racist", Todd Robertson, 1992

A black State Trooper will protect the rights of the son of a KKK member. This image conveys a message of complete oblivion and innocence during a time of growing and changing hatred and unfairness.

In turning their backs on modern medicine, Aymara mothers and midwives are dooming their children to death. They should embrace new measures that preserve their culture in order to ensure the survival of their mothers and children.

Analysis

I believe that this image is showing what an effort it is for developing countries to get the essentials of life. In an industrialized country, such as the US, we don't really think about the ways that having certain technology has affected us. We take those types of things for granted when there are other people in the world that don't have the same opportunities as us.

“No one is born racist”, Todd Robinson, 1992.

This is a touching photo which offers a contrast childhood innocence in the child seeing his reflection, and the raw hate of the KKK, as the child is wearing a robe. There is also some irony because the image shows is a black police officer protecting the rights of the KKK to protest. This photo could also prove the point that no human is born as a racist.
Analysis Document

a quote from the officer:
“I didn’t even see the kid. I was just looking down to see what was bumping on my shield. And when I looked down, there was this little kid in a Klan uniform. He saw his reflection in the riot shield. He was tracing his outline. The child was oblivious to what was going on around him”.

"Sea Challenge"

The picture delivers a message of joy.  The boys in the picture are definitely enjoying themselves, and it should make the viewers feel good.  The sun makes the picture feel warm, and it should remind the viewer of a time where friends have fun together. Though the image may not be as serious as others viewed in class, I believe that it is just as important to view a photo like this and feel good just by looking at it, and not feel sorrow or fear towards subjects in other pictures.

7-year-old straps AK-47 in Syrian Civil War

This image depicts the savageness of the Syrian conflict. Seven-year-old Ahmed totes an AK-47 Assault Rifle. The son of a rebel in the Free Syrian Army, Ahmed stands guard in front of a barricade protecting his fellow rebels from government snipers. This child portrays a look of honor as he stares right at the photographer, as if to illustrate his pride in what he is doing. Though the rebels may be fighting for a good cause, there is no excuse to involve children in the conflict, as it exhibits a message that violence is the answer.

Homeless Man in NYC

Initially the viewer looks at the image and sees the familiar sight of a homeless man on the streets. I hope that immediately they start forming their own judgements and criticism, but to recognize that they would never verbalize what they are thinking. Lastly I want the viewer to read the caption and rethink their opinions. With only two sentences, the entire perception of this man changes instantly.
"My daughter lives in Pennsylvania. She’s working at a nursing home and studying to be an accountant. She’s my pride and joy."
"Does she know you’re homeless?"

"No, she’s got enough to worry about. I just tell her that I’m retired."

UN peacekeepers are constantly in extremely difficult situations. The peacekeepers, most of whom are less professional troops than their European comrades, are charged with balancing their military influence with keeping peace between warring factions. The issue of placing daunting operations in the hands of the less experienced is clearly illustrated in the photo.

"Victim of Beauty"

This photograph alone does a remarkable job summing up the way our society views strong images like this today. Without even thinking, we automatically jump to conclusions and sometimes, assume the worst. Slowing down and looking past wounds and scars and seeing independence is something that we all can learn from.

"Bride, Kosovo", Nita Zeqiri, 2013

This picture shows the tradition of what brides look like in Kosovo, Russia. This photo shows that even though we think of brides as wearing a white gown and veil, different people and places have different traditions. This tradition seems crazy at first, but the meaning of it makes people really think and realize the beauty.

Scratches In Auschwitz-Unknown-1945

http://www.emlii.com/1d70067/29-of-The-Most-Influential-Images-of-All-Time

This is a photo of a gas chamber in a concentration camp that was used by the Nazi party of Germany to exterminate Jews, homosexuals, Slavs, prisoners of war, and many other people who were against the Nazi party. The marks on the wall are scratch marks that were left by people in the gas chamber who were slowly being suffocated by the gas Zyklon B. There were kids and adults in the chambers indicated by the varying heights of the scratch marks. This picture was taken to capture the pure horror that was World War II and the Holocaust. By not having any living things in the picture and a gray background, the photographer is leaving the rest of the photograph up to the interpretors imagination.

Blood Spotted Table at Attack Scene of Mark Lippert

Blood represents evil and a problem. This photo shows the severity of the situation the United States is facing with South Korea. Since the Korean War, the United States has stationed troops in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea. However, this implement of troops has led many to see the United States as a barrier against unification. If we do not change our militaristic invasion, more destructive attacks and events will take place. The United States must pull troops out of South Korea and let foreign countries solve problems on their own.

Making Egypt's Streets Safe for Women, Emen Helal, March 6th 2015

Egypt has had a huge history of public sexual harassment and assault against women. This violence and lack of safety for women in Egypt has driven them to a strong need for change.

The woman on the ground is in labor and needs medical attention, but she fears going into the city to get the help she needs because of the terrorist groups in the area.

As Ebola Ebbs in Sierra Leone, Life Begins to Return to Normal by Bryan Denton, Article Posted on March 10, 2015

Because the woman is supposedly ill with Ebola, she is attempting to escape from the dark depths behind her doorway. Her face reveals the pain and sorrow that she is experiencing. The two men whose arms are bright from sunshine and health are warning her to remain inside in order to keep the virus retained and the new form of normalcy maintained in Sierra Leone. Even though the number of Ebola cases is certainly declining, fear still remains among the citizens.

This photo delivers the message of the severity of the poverty and disease that is spread throughout Sierra Leone. It shows that this disease has caused divides in people families and has put even children's lives in danger where they are hopeless and there is nothing anyone can do. Ebola has taken over this country and is not improving.

Even though both of her children were conceived in a horrific way and she has little to nothing, the family remains strong and ready for what the future brings.

Ebola in Liberia

Interpretive Statement: The message of this photo is that although the ebola outbreak did not affect many Americans, in poor countries such as Liberia, people were dying everyday, people who had families and loved ones like Mekie Nagbe. This powerful photo also shows how ebola controlled not only peoples' lives, but also their heritage and traditions. The woman on the ground is representing the whole country of Liberia as she begs to for ebola to desist and bring her sister back.

Making Egypt's Streets Safe for Women, Eman Halel, March 6, 2015

This photo shows that even in our modern day reformed society, there are still women’s rights issues that affect women everyday in Egypt. The separation between subway cars is an example for how women’s rights and positive treatment are still serious problems that need to be fixed across the world. The stares from the men depicts how women are still treated like objects and experience sexual harassment while on public transportation.

Cynthia (22) and Vivian (4 months) at home, Kitra Cahana, October 19, 2013

This photo of an exhausted, desperate mother in a dim house highlights the reality of food insecurity in the United States. This woman, who carried a child while eating almost nothing but cereal, has to struggle constantly to feed her family and now care for her newborn child. She looks like a shadow. Food insecurity is a crippling burden that no family should have to suffer.

Ghadames Libya, George Steinmetz 2013

The traditional mud-brick houses in this image are of varying sizes and heights, and are arranged in no specific fashion.  However they are unified with walkways that were designed before the Roman empire for women to move freely while concealed from the view of men. This concept simulates the way that women are shrouded in Muslim society today.

American Soldier Gets Directions From French Woman, April, 1944

In this image an American solder is sitting on a pile of rubble with a French woman. She is giving him directions on the map they are holding. This image helps to show the human factor in war. You can see that he is wearing jeans instead of fatigues and they seem to be having a relatively relaxed conversation. This shows that people still don't lose their humanity in war and that even people who speak different languages still can relate.

No Name, Brent Stirton, 2011

This photo shows us that we shouldn’t take things, such as sight, for granted. On the other hand, it shows that it is possible to live joyfully without such an important sense. These girls show us that they are able to enjoy life through other senses.

Protests in Ferguson By Whitney Curtis 2014

The image shows the irony and sad state of the police force. Irony can be found in this image because the protests that are going on during the taking of this image are about the shooting of Michael Brown by an officer and Police Brutality. It very simply shows that black men are not the problem and police are.

People from Western Cultures seem to think that they can portray the poor in any way they want without asking them. The photographer who took this image disagreed. He thought that it was an issue that the subjects of the images do not get a say in how they are depicted, and he thought that this was unfair.

"Forward Ever, Backward Never" by James H. Barker, 1969
