This photo is a representation of early attempts by the organization Mars One to colonize the planet Mars. Prominent in the foreground of the photo are the dwelling pods, in which humans will live while they work to make the planet habitable. A lone astronaut can be seen in the middle of the photo, but the background is left purposefully blank, in order to symbolize the vast space and emptiness of Mars.
